DbOctopus Beta available for download

We've released beta version of our first SQL Server tool. We would be grateful to anyone who can help beta test it.

It's a tool specialized for editing data in SQL Server. We made it for our own use because we were frustrated with SSMS in such tasks. Locating, sorting or editing data in big tables was never easy as it could be. Also, when I'm inspecting some row, I'm often interested in related rows in FK tables - wouldn't it be good to somehow jump to parent or child rows in that other table? Or, when I'm changing some ID which comes from other table, wouldn't it be helpful to just open drop down to see list of possible values from that other table? Most of these tasks are possible since database knows how tables are connected with FK keys. DbOctopus was our shot on solving these problems we faced every day while we edited data in our databases.

QueueExplorer 2.2.4 - bugfixes and performance improvements

Changes in this release:

Faster loading of big files and reduced memory usage
Faster display of large XML message bodies
Command line option for turning off loading of public queues for performance reasons - /NoPublic
Bugfix: message body larger than 64KB was not correctly displayed/edited
Bugfix: messages containing byte 0 were not completely displayed in text view.
Bugfix: queue list didn't show all queue properties correctly.
Bugfix: on some Vista machines QueueExplorer worked with reduced functionality

QueueExplorer 2.2.3 released

Changes in this release:

Queues are now closed immediately after each operation to prevent locking issues with other applications
Reduced MSMQ security requirements. QueueExplorer required full MSMQ permissions no matter which operation was performed. Now it will ask only for what's needed, e.g. Peek to get list of messages, Receive to delete message, etc. Works only on .Net 2.0 or higher
Bugfix: More complex class hierarchies in .Net view crashed entire QueueExplorer.

QueueExplorer 2.2 is out - XML view and CVS export are most significant changes.
Other enhancements are support for BodyType property, switch for starting with opening queues on remote machine, adjustable limit for number of displayed messages, public API for accessing MQ files.

QueueExplorer 2.1 - more responsive, better Bulk message sender, multi-queue operations

New version of QueueExplorer is released. Focus of this release is on improved responsiveness of user interface during long-running operations. Progress is displayed, either on progress window or on status bar. Most operations could be canceled.

Using QueueExplorer for stress testing is improved too. Bulk sender (previous Mass paste) takes all messages currently on clipboard and sends them to target queue as many times as you want. New feature is adjustable delay that could be added between messages during Bulk sending.

Last improvement is ability to delete or purge several queues at once. When queues are displayed in right pane list, multiple queues could be selected.

QueueExplorer 1.4.1 - fix for TimeToReachQueue issue

QueueExplorer 1.4.1 fixes potentially very unpleasant problem - sometimes messages would get lost when they are sent to a queue - during paste, mass paste, load or drag&drop operations.

When it happens?
Messages could be lost when they are sent to remote queue and their TimeToReachQueue or TimeToBeReceived properties are 0. Practically it happens if messages stay in queue unconsumed for very long time.

Why it happens?
All QueueExplorer operations are performed using standard MSMQ Send/Receive operations. When message with TimeToReachQueue=0 is sent to remote queue, it would be discarded. Sometimes one or few messages could reach destination queue (depending on exact timing) but following messages are lost. Some of these messages would show up in outgoing queue for a while, but not for long.

How is this fixed?
TimeToReachQueue or TimeToBeReceived are set to 60s if they are below that value at the time of sending.

Full list of changes:

Toolbar and additional menus for mostly used functions are added. Among other things it's more convenient to change computer or to refresh queues or messages.
Viewing message details for several messages is easier now - you can go to next or previous message directly from message viewer.
Message viewer is opened on tab that was used last time.
Drag and drop of files from Windows explorer now opens "Create new message" with that file as message body.
Queue icons now show its transactional status.
Fixed performance issue when changing queues on Windows 2000.
Supports .Net Framework 2.0 final.

New version of QueueExplorer addresses features most users requested: messages could be sorted and message counts for all public and private queues are displayed at all times. Other improvements include better memory management and performance gains. Window size and selected columns are persisted between sessions. Last addition is number of selected messages in status bar.

Finally MSMQ messages with serialized .Net objects are not black boxes any more - instead of seeing them in some hex view QueueExplorer allows you to see full .Net objects with all their fields, even private ones! It doesn't matter if binary or Xml serialization is used. All you need to do is tell QueueExplorer where to find assembly with classes.
This is not all of MSMQ troubleshooting features in this release - message body can be saved to disk for further analysis. You can use that body to create new messages.
Remote queues are no more read-only! Yes, you can do all these nice things that used to work with local queues only - send, copy, move messages, even mass paste on remote machines.

What happens when message in MSMQ can not be processed? Most common solution is to put it back to queue and retry later. But if it fails repeatedly following messages will never be processed - queue will be blocked with so-called poison message. How to fight this situation?
